This guide is for painting a red 4‑door Toyota Hilux in true outback style — done in the shed, using rattle cans, patience, and common sense.

Prep Stages (Why Order Matters)

Stage 1 – Shape
Knock repairs into shape without digging holes.

Stage 2 – Refine
Remove deep scratches so red doesn’t show your sins.

Stage 3 – Key Existing Paint
Dull the surface so new paint sticks.

Stage 4 – Clean
Remove wax, grease, fingerprints, and regret.

Step‑by‑Step Paint Walkthrough

1. Repairs

80–120 grit if needed
180 → 240 → 320 grit

Never paint red over 180 grit — it’ll haunt you.

2. Existing Paint

Grey Scotch‑Brite OR 600 wet
Dull finish, no shiny spots

3. Clean

Wax & grease remover on
Clean rag off immediately

Don’t use thinners — it smears contamination.

4. Prime

Etch only on bare metal
High build everywhere else
Sand primer 400 / 600

5. Colour

Warm cans in hot water
Light tack coat
3–4 medium coats
10–15 min flash time

Door Shuts, C‑Pillar & Roof Tips

Paint Order (Critical)

Door shuts first
Bottom of C‑pillar
Up and along the roof
Down the A‑pillar

Lower pressure passes in shuts
Open doors halfway, not fully
